When I launched Cyclone Web Hosts, I had no investors, no team, and no customers. What I did have was technical knowledge, a few servers, and the determination to build a hosting company that put customer service first.
The Technical Foundation
I started with two dedicated servers and built the stack from the ground up: KVM virtualization for VPS hosting, cPanel/WHM for shared hosting management, and custom automation scripts for provisioning, monitoring, and backup.
Pricing Strategy
Competing with the big hosting companies on price is a losing game. Instead, I focused on providing better support, more transparent pricing, and features that matter to developers and small businesses.
Growth Challenges
- Support scaling: every customer expects instant help
- Infrastructure investment: always needs to be ahead of demand
- Security: hosting means you are responsible for hundreds of customer sites
- Billing and automation: WHMCS handles this but requires constant configuration
